Sunday Stew {3}

Sunday Stew is a Weekly Meme hosted lovingly by Books Devoured.  Feel free to visit and link up and share!  I am super excited to actually be linking up for the SECOND consecutive week.  I am so on it!!  :)  Just kidding!  Hopefully this is a good sign that I might be actually getting my stuff together!

Bookmark of the Week:

This week is a bit of a step up from last week, but sadly I have yet to use one of my pretty bookmarks.  Instead I have used a delivery confirmation receipt and a birthday card.  The birthday card is actually a pretty darn good bookmark as it smells like cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg!

Around the Web:

Well, this week was kind of slow, although there seemed to be a lot of hops going on and I always like to click through them and check out new blogs.  But, I think the most exciting thing to happen was the article posted in the Wall Street Journal that pretty much took shots at YA literature.  It really caused quite a stir and if you are on twitter, you may have noticed the #yasaves in a lot of tweets.  It is quite a controversial article and I plan to post my thoughts on it this week.

Around Me:

This week was a crazy fun week.  It was the first full week of summer break for my kiddos and my 6 year-old was up at the crack of dawn ready to get in the pool and ready to drive me crazy ever single day!  She has been in the pool everyday but one since school let out!  My 11 year-old had football three days this week and he was not happy to learn that it began at 9 a.m.  He is so much like me it is crazy!  Neither one of us is a pleasant, early morning person.  Although, I think that if he had to practice any later in this Oklahoma heat he would gladly do 9 a.m.!  My daughter (6) began her summer schedule for gymnastics which wasn’t bad, except for Friday, when we had to be there by 8 a.m.!  Have I ever mentioned that I am not a morning person?  UGH!  Thursday was my birthday (be sure you enter my birthday month giveaway) and I hit the top of the hill!  It was a fun celebration as my kids were super excited to plan a celebration for me.  I am looking forward to this weekend as my first-born turns 14.  I am still not quite sure what to do for him, so if you have any ideas, please share!  He’s a good kid and doesn’t even want much for his birthday, just an i-pod and an x-box.  He got a kicking guitar last year, so it may be hard to top it…

So, if you have any ideas of what might be a SUPER cool gift idea for a 14 year-old boy that likes rock music and jamming on his guitar let me know!!  Maybe if I go with your idea I will send you one of my really pretty bookmarks (that I unfortunately fail to use)!!

I hope that you have a great week and I look forward to seeing you back here next week…

Thanks for participating in Sunday Stew! Seems like we all had the same idea about what to post for around the web!

It is hard to buy for boys that age I think. My son will be 13 in October and I have no idea what to get him either! Sorry I am no help!!

First of all, happy belated birthday! :)

As for your son, I don’t know how much you’re looking to spend, but since he’s a good kid, I’d get him an 16 GB iPod Touch (the 8 GB doesn’t have that much storage) with an Amazon gift card for tunes and accessories (Amazon has better deals on music downloads than iTunes.) I got an iPod Touch in December with Christmas money, and I love it. Oh, and I got an iPod speaker dock for my OLD iPod (compatible with my new iPod as well), which is wonderful. If money is an issue, then perhaps you and the in-laws can get this for him. Since he likes much so much, it sounds like the iPod is the way to go.

If money is an issue (and 16 GB iPod Touch is around $300, which is a lot in this economy), you could always get him a gift card for the local music store (Guitar World or whatever) so he can get a new strap, strings, pedals, an amp, whatever he wants. Or just take him there and let him pick out some stuff (if you like to give him physical gifts.)

I think showing an interest in his love for music and an interest in his “talent” (hey, I don’t know if he’s a good guitar) player will enhance your parent-child relationship.

    Dear Cici,

Why in the world would you not tell us that it was your birthday? I am SO sorry I missed it darling – but HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! 😀

On to your search for the perfect present for your child…hmmm. I believe (of course, *groan*) that books make the best presents – so perhaps a biography/autobiography of a famous musician he likes? Also, I think that EXPERIENCES matter far more than presents – so why not gift him the experience of a concert! Concert tickets make a great birthday presents!!! 😀 Also, an mp3 player is awesome, if he doesn’t already have one. If he does, perhaps a docking station for that mp3 player, so he can play music in his room? ORRRR (and this just might be a projection of my own, given that I wanted this SO bad when I was a teenager), a DRUM KIT!!!! (like this one, perhaps!??! ). Also, if he wants to learn a new instrument – perhaps music lessons? 😀 So many choices.

Anyhow, I hope your birthday was fantastic, and I pray that his birthday will be amazing as well! 😀 Love,

I think many good things will come of the WSJ article! I am enjoying the Sunday Stew and I hope more and more bloggers take part!

My son told me he wouldn’t mind just getting money too, but I like to try to come up with something fun and useful, but I am drawing blanks. I told him we could go get some cool sunglasses or something and he is content with his Ray Bans…Might take him to a My Chemical Romance concert or something…although I think live would be a little too much for a teenager…

Thank you so much!! I appreciate the birthday wishes!! I celebrate all month long :) so I will still accept the wishes happily!!

My son loves music and I thought of taking him to a concert of one of his favorite bands that I just found out will be in Dallas in September and also St. Louis in August (we own a house in STL area, so it might be perfect). So maybe I can do that! Son #2 has a drum kit and they often can be found rocking out together! I didn’t exactly get a lot when I was a kid, so I have had the tendency to spoil mine a little too much :S For Christmas I gave my boys lessons at an improv acting class and they seemed to really like that, so I will be signing him up for that as well.

I just always hope for their birthdays to be spectacular, so I tend to stress a little bit about it!

    Thanks again!!

Thanks for the birthday wishes :) and thanks for the great suggestions! I am leaning towards the ipod…maybe an iphone (just to get it all done in one shot). He is a pretty good guitar player, I love to listen to him play! He likes some of “my” old bands that I enjoyed “back in the day”! Guns-n-Roses, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, the really good guitar playing stuff! I also took him shopping this week and got some new clothes, but I don’t like to count that as ‘gifts’…I am seriously considering taking him to a My Chemical Romance concert…I think that would be awesome :)

Thanks for all the nice suggestions! I will be sure to update as to how it goes for him!!
