Welcome S.M. Boyce!

Hey there, beautiful people! I’m S. M. Boyce (call me Boyce)—fantasy author of the young adult Grimoire Saga. I’ve been invited over to chat about the character I most connected with in my series, so thanks for having me.

I have to say that my favorite character isn’t either of the main characters, but rather a secondary character named Deidre.

Deidre is of a unique race in the world of the Grimoire Saga—she’s an isen, or a soul stealer that remains young and relatively immortal as long as she steals a soul once a decade.  These isen have a barb in their right palm that can suck the soul from their victims, and stealing a soul gives the isen control over the person’s skills, knowledge, and even their body. The isen can change form at will, effectively enabling them to live the lives of their prey.

Deidre has endured, suffered, and persevered. In her teens, she fell in love for the first and only time with a young man named Michael, who worshipped her. She had never felt so loved. So cherished. But after he proposed, a family secret quickly came to light—a dark one that left her lover dead. She thinks she knows who killed him, but the problem is she hasn’t figured out how to get her revenge.

Over the last few centuries, Deidre has plotted, tricked, and connived her way to become one of the most powerful isen alive—and the need for revenge has slowly unwoven every thread of her moral fiber. She no longer cares about anything but her revenge. Everyone around her is merely a tool.

I love Deidre’s character because she is so morally corrupt. She’s a sympathetic villain. There’s a certain liberation in writing an emotionally absent character—she’s obviously not a role model, but she is simultaneously misunderstood and damaged. Her “super power” is that everyone seems to underestimate her, even though that is the most dangerous thing anyone could possibly do short of running themselves through with a sword.

Exploring a personality that so consistently manipulates others is an interesting study in character development and the craft of writing. So as an author, I really have enjoyed developing and honing her character into what I believe is something truly exciting and unique.

Deidre only appears for a short time in the first books. As the series progresses, the reader learns more about  her, and she becomes an increasingly important character. Every book has an epilogue, and the epilogues are the only time the reader gets to see the world from Deidre’s perspective. But for now, I won’t spoil the fun by giving you any more clues.

So what about you guys? How do you connect with characters? In most series, do you find yourself more connected with the main characters or truly unique secondary characters? I would love your input.

About Lichgates (Grimoire Saga #1)

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.

Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea’s royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.
