Summer On The Short Bus

Short Bus Cover (1)Release Date: April 1, 2014

Publisher: Running Press Kids

Spoiled, Versace-clad Cricket Montgomery has seventeen years of pampering under her belt. So when her father decides to ship her off to a summer camp for disabled teens to help her learn some accountability, Cricket resigns herself to three weeks of handicapped hell.

Her sentence takes a bearable turn as she discovers the humor and likeability of the campers and grows close to fellow counselors. Now, if she can just convince a certain Zac Efron look-alike with amazing blue eyes that she finally realizes there’s life after Gucci, this summer could turn out to be the best she’s ever had.

Summer on the Short Bus is a very non-P.C., contemporary YA with a lot of attitude, tons of laughs, and a little life lesson along the way.

“Crandell creates a wonderful and relatable protagonist with Cricket but even better than that, she surrounds her with equally relatable, flawed, and real characters…This book is an absolute winner!” – Feathered Quill Book Reviews

“A novel oozing with heart and humanity.” – Ken Baker, E! News correspondent and author of Fangirl and How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love

“A hilarious and heartwarming ride.” – Jennifer Salvato Doktorski, author of How My Summer Went Up in Flames and Famous Last Words

Bethany lives in San Diego with her husband, two kiddos (one of whom is differently-abled), and a chocolate lab who has no regard for personal space. She believes that prayer solves problems and that Jake Ryan is going to show up at her door any minute now…. She is represented by Rachael Dugas of Talcott Notch Literary Services.

My Boyfriend Barfed In My Handbag…

About My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag… And Other Things You Can’t Ask Martha

clean upPaperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Plume (February 25, 2014)
Got a cleaning disaster on your hands? From theDeadspin and Jezebel author of the popular “Ask a Clean Person” column comes a hilarious and practical guide to cleaning all of life’s little, and sometimes rare, household emergencies. Just in time for Spring Cleaning – Jolie Kerr’s MY BOYFRIEND BARFED IN MY HANDBAG…AND OTHER THINGS YOU CAN’T ASK MARTHA (a Plume original, on sale February 25, 2014) tackles the most common (and uncommon) spills, odors, and – let’s face it – those oh-so embarrassing stains you just can’t ask your parents about.
With her signature charm and humor, Jolie Kerr takes on everything from Cleaning 101 questions such as ‘How do I use a mop?’ to the more obscure ‘How do I clean up this ginger beer that exploded all over my kitchn?’ MY BOYFRIEND BARFED IN MY HANDBAG is NOT your Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook! Jolie helps with even the most nightmarish cleaning such as:
  • How to Clean a Toilet: Complete with a rousing discussion of how and why to clean a toilet brush! Because at some point you may want to cleanthe thing you use to clean the other things in the home.
  • Deep Cleaning All Types of Makeup Brushes: Extend the life of your beautifying tools and rid them of breakout-causing bacteria.
  • Getting to Know Your Washer and Dryer: Everything you ever wanted to know about laundry, but were too afraid to ask!
  • Getting the McDonald’s French Fry Small Out of the Minivan: Avoid those rearview mirror trees unless you want a McDonald’s-french-fry-and-pine-tree-smelling car.
  • Bong Water on the Carpet: Because stoners can be clean people too!
…and other cleaning tips you can’t ask Martha.
MY BOYFRIEND BARFED IN MY HANDBAG showcases Jolie’s infinite cleaning knowledge and terrific sense of humor, including remedies for heirloom wedding dress restoration, confetti stains on wood floors, dusty ceiling fans and endless laundry, as well general tips for leading a tidier and happier existence.
Whether you’re moving into a college dorm, purchasing your first home, or finally getting around to cleaning your old one, no stain, spill, or surprise windowsill mushroom growth is too odd or embarrassing for Jolie. MY BOYFRIEND BARFED IN MY HANDBAG…AND OTHER THINGS YOU CAN’T ASK MARTHA is the perfect guide for college students or housewarming gift to someone new to living on their own.
“Jolie Kerr really cuts through the grease and grime with her new book. I do what she tells me to do.” – Amy Sedaris

I am not sure that I will ever have a use for all the cleaning tips in the book, but they  sure were funny to read!  Growing up, I didn’t have a Suzy P. Homemaker mom to teach me all the ins and outs of housekeeping, so there are certainly areas I am lacking in!  When I saw this book come up for review, I wanted to grab it.  I have looked at a lot of cleaning tip books over my decades of domestic bliss, and usually put them down.  Most conjured up the thought, “are you freaking kidding me?”!  I don’t do certain things, I don’t really like to do domestic things (just read my Twitter description).  My Boyfriend Barfed In My Handbag was a fun, practical cleaning guide.  I am sure June Cleaver and Martha Stewart will have to wash their eyes out after reading a few of the tips, which makes it perfect for today’s modern gal!  Even if you never really clean anything and live like a total slob, My Boyfriend Barfed In My Handbag will be fun to read and share tidbits of knowledge with your friends.  You never know when one you just might need to pull one of these tips out of the handbag!

Come Home To Me

Book 6 of the Whiskey Creek Series

Released March 25, 2014
The secrets that made you leave home can also bring you back…
When Presley Christensen returns to Whiskey Creek with her little boy after two years away, she has completely changed her life. She’s made peace with her past and overcome the negative behavior that resulted from her difficult childhood. Now she’s back in the small town that was the closest thing to “home” she ever knew. The town where she can be with the sister who is her only family.
There’s just one catch. Aaron Amos still lives in Whiskey Creek, at least until he moves to Placerville to open a branch of the Amos brothers’ auto body shop. And no matter how hard she’s tried, Presley hasn’t been able to get over him. Seeing him again makes the longing so much worse. But she hopes she can get through the next few months, because she can’t fall back into his arms…or his bed. She’s come too far to backslide now. And there’s a secret she’s been guarding—a secret she’ll do anything to protect.

My Thoughts:

Another wonderful story by Brenda Novak!  The Whiskey Creek Series has quickly become one of my favorite series to read.  The characters are all so real and relatable.  We all know someone from Whiskey Creek, a town where everyone knows each other.  Presley is a trooper, I could immediately identify with her.  It is so easy to see how far she has come and so easy feel her desire to everything right by Wyatt and her new life.  The pull of true love, and the struggle to fight it, is so strong that it can literally be felt through the pages.  My heart broke for Aaron.  He was such a slow learner, but I couldn’t help but be on his side.  What I really liked about COME HOME TO ME, is that there were a good three solid stories within this one.  I am not sure how I feel about the deception in the story, both from Presley and from her sister Cheyenne.  Unfortunately, these characters are all so likeable that I feel a bit protective of those they are trying to deceive.  While it makes a great story, it just never ends well, as we see with Presley and Aaron.  I just know Cheyenne is asking for trouble, and for no reason!

One thing I really enjoy about the Whiskey Creek Series is that you can pick up any book and begin reading and feel like you are Up to date on everyone.  Each book is unique in its own story, but yet so intertwined with the other.  There really aren’t a lot of questions left unanswered, but there isn’t enough information to spoil any other book in the series.  It certainly is a well written series and one I think you all will enjoy.  It has enough drama to keep you reading and just the perfect amount of romance.

Brenda Novak has quickly become tops on my favorite authors list and is certainly an author I have no problem recommending, even to some of my most conservative reader friends.

About the Author:

brenda novak2“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”

However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. In school, math and science were her best subjects, and when it came time to pick a major in college, she chose business.

Abandoning her academic scholarship to Brigham Young University at the age of 20 in order to get married and start a family, Brenda dabbled in commercial real estate, then became a loan officer.

“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda admits. “I learned how to write by reading what others have written. The best advice for any would-be author: read, read, read….”

Brenda sold her first book, and the rest is history. Many of her novels have won or placed in contests such as the National Reader’s Choice, the Bookseller’s Best, the Write Touch, the Award of Excellence and the Beacon Award for Published Authors.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children—three girls and two boys. She juggles her writing career with her children’s softball and soccer games, field trips, carpool runs and homework sessions.

When she’s not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually working on her annual fundraiser for diabetes research—an on-line auction held at her website May 1st – May 31st. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking–she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!

Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin

Drew Westfall wants nothing more than to forget what he had to do in the name of “smart” business. Cutting off all ties with his parents—including handing over the entire contents of his trust fund to a charity—he takes off for Bridger, Colorado where his best friend has an extra room for him. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that his business degree won’t do him much good in a town as small as Bridger, but he’s broke and has nowhere else to go.

Eden Torresi has every reason to wallow. Not only did she have to sell her house to pay for her mother’s medical expenses, but she also had to drop out of school and is in a relationship with a guy unwilling to commit. But Eden isn’t the wallowing type. Instead, she chooses to spend most of her time taking care of the seniors at Silver Linings Assisted Living. When she learns that her boyfriend’s new roommate is down on his luck, her caring nature makes her want to reach out to him and offer what help she can. But the more time they spend together, the more complicated things get, especially when the seniors of Silver Linings decide to play matchmaker.

My Thoughts:

Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin is a sweet love story.  It can often be difficult to carry characters over from another book and make them their own, but Kaylee does a great job of doing that.  One thing that is fun with books in a series like this is you can continue to build off of familiarity.  I never like when a series ends, but I also don’t like when a series should end, but doesn’t.  Books like these in the Ripple Effect Novella Series, allow a great continuation with enough unique individuality to keep you interested.  A great quick read that will warm your heart and lead you to the next book!
