I had the opportunity to ask Abigail a few questions that I thought would give readers a little better insight into Abigail and Black Orchid. Thanks so much, Abigail, for taking the time for such thoughtful answers!
When developing a character or a scene, do you have any rituals or superstitions?
I might be the anti-ritual/superstition writer when it comes to how I write my characters and scenes. I’m always trying to improve my writing, so I’m always trying different methods. For characters I’ve done the 100 questions thing, I’ve found pictures of them, I’ve picked a person I know to base them on. For scenes I’ve done outlining, picking specific songs for that scene, researched locations, grids with the key points (in this scene the romantic arc needs this, the paranormal arc needs this, this character arc needs this), etc.
Is there a particular character of yours that you are extremely close to?
I’m probably closest to Ellie. She’s the heroine of the first book I self-published – Blue Violet (Svatura #1). Ellie has the most of me in her. It’s funny because people will sometimes tell me she’s too positive. But I was writing my own honest reactions. And I don’t consider myself to be one of those bubbly people.
What has inspired you most in your writing?
My readers. I’ve always love writing – and the ability to use my imagination to create people and worlds has always been awesome. But once I started self-publishing, the response from readers has been amazing. Now when I write, I frequently am thinking about how they’ll react to a character or story line. I love getting their feedback.
Is there one characteristic of your characters that you would like to possess?
I would love to shape shift into multiple animals like Ellie. She can shift into a falcon, a jaguar, a dragon, and a wolf. How fun would that be?
What kind of music do you turn to when writing? Does it become the book’s ‘theme song’?
Black Orchid is the first book I’ve written where a specific song popped out as a theme song – Demons by Imagine Dragons. I listen to a lot of different kinds of music in general. So when writing I tend to pick whatever fits the scene I’m working on. Melancholy for sad scenes, Rock anthems for the fight scenes. And so forth.
What would you ask Abigail? Leave your questions in the comments and we’ll see if we can’t get her to answer a few!
